Out of the mouths of babes: Localisation no insurance against shortage
The baby formula shortage in the US offers a counterpoint to the thesis that globalisation represents vulnerability
Localisation of Production No Panacea This is not behind a paywall
Going by the bitter experience of 2013, as noted by the learned author Mr. T K Arun, let us hope that the babudom manning the ministries of health and family welfare remember the essence of that good old adage 'once bitten twice shy.
Dear American and Indian People's Well-being Editor,
Glad to share my understanding of your opinion with a few additions from my end.
President Biden remained very busy in becoming the leading exporter of major weapons around the world. So, he couldn't spare time to solve this daunting challenge of parents and the infants needing breastmilk substitutes.
It is a fact that leaving such important subjects to its own fate, Mr Biden continued to supply arms to different countries and recently to Ukraine, and fuel wars and conflicts worldwide. Most disgraceful, disrespectful and dishonourable acts of Mr Biden practiced towards Mothers/Parents of infants need to be condemned and to be corrected by President Biden itself with policy makers.
Good that you've clearly exposed Mr Biden's blunders towards its citizens and Indian leadership's when TB Patients in 2013 suffered because of a stock-out of TB drugs in India.
The entire description of the American problem of mouths of crying babies with glaring looks of Mothers and Fathers is summed up very well. Justifiably, you've underlined the importance of reasonably diversified globalised sourcing as a strength and not as a vulnerability. I look at it as a practically implementable reliable solution for both countries ie; The U.S.A. and India.
If I may add, the Modi Government's blunder in India includes the same practice of monopoly and duopoly in awarding contracts in almost all important sectors increasing multiple kinds of inequality ie; disproportionate share of the capital and the wealth in the economy. Same applies to the utter failure of policies on the economic front related to diversified globalised sourcing of products.
Thank you for highlighting parents' plight in America and sufferings of TB patients' earlier in India as well.
An ordinary, well-informed reader and creative soul,
Vandana
